Sorry #ABCnightline, not MY kid!
Last night watched an old ABC Nightline special (on Hulu) about sexy clothes and media being targeted at the ‘tween’ market. While I would agree that there are ‘child’ stars like Miley Cyrus and Taylor Momsen dressing completely inappropriately for their age, and that this is a terrible example for younger girls; I definitely have an issue with the way ABC presented it.
Firstly, the two girls being ‘interviewed’ for the segment were 12 years old and sitting on the bed in one of their rooms reading People, Glamour, and Seventeen magazines. Forgive me, but aren’t those a bit out of their age range and demographic? My mother didn’t even let me read Seventeen until I turned seventeen because she felt the subject matter wasn’t appropriate. Hello? It’s called parenting!
Second, one of the girls went shopping with her mother at Forever XXI and H&M. Once again, two stores whose target demographic is NOT tweens. They panned the cameras across the clothing in the store showing short skirts, dresses and corsets all while the narrator talks about how this sexually suggestive clothing is marketed to young 10-13 year old girls. [I think not.] And furthermore, when the girl tried on several pieces of clothing the mother said “no” each time proving to me that this is most likely not a shop this child frequents with her mother.
I don’t disagree with the idea that girls should stay girls for as long as possible. There’s no reason for girls to dress older than they are and there are stores geared towards tweens with age appropriate clothing: Justice, Gap Kids or The Gap, Old Navy, The Children’s Place (yes, up to 14!), and of course there’s the old standby department stores. Hmmm…oh yeah parents this is your job to monitor where your kids buy clothes!
My issue is this: “ABC, why sensationalize?” The problem here to me is the parents. Parents who don’t monitor what their children read, watch, or wear are at fault. I’m not saying parents should prohibit access to the world but if keeping your kid a kid is important to you then take the necessary precautions to keep their lives as wholesome and age-appropriate as possible. Oh man, it’s that parenting stuff again!
If ABC really wants a good show, go interview Taylor Momsen and Miley Cyrus’ parents and find out why they allow their daughters to dress the way they do. Then, perhaps find a few parents in the US with 14-15 year old daughters whom they allow to dress inappropriately and find out what’s going on in their ridiculous minds. If they need any help finding people, I grew up in Southern California; land of the mini-skirts…I know a few…I’ll call them.
We brought kids into this world to raise them not to just let them grow like weeds. Sorry Miley and Taylor, but you just couldn’t be MY kid. (not dressed like that anyway)!
Let’s stop pointing the finger of blame on the media and the marketers, and remember than when you do, there are 4 other fingers pointing right back at you!
You can watch the video HERE on Hulu

I am Thankful: Family, Friends and Love :)
Above (and of course all day on Twitter) you'll see #Tweeps all across the web talking about what matters to them the most.
Although the year is not quite over, Thanksgiving is a day of reflection and gratitude. We think about our relationships with people and how they have affected our lives and how we, in-turn have affected theirs.
Whether seen as 'good' or 'bad', each connection we have to another person in this life is valuable. We can each teach another person something new, or shed a light in their lives for the better.
I am thankful not only today, but all year long for the people in my life who keep me sane: my mother, my father, my husband and my son. (...funny how those are the same 4 people that contribute to my insanity)
Being a 23 year old mother, the past 4 years of my life have been a learning experience; a painful, terrifying, emotional, beautiful, glorious and rewarding experience...and I'm thankful for every minute of it.
Today I also want to thank YOU: If you're reading this, Thank You! My blogging journey has been one of trial and error, defeats and wonderful successes, and ultimately something that has enriched my life vastly! I am thankful to have met such wonderful people who have taught me new things and embraced me as a friend. I am grateful to you all for being the glorious, kind, welcoming, wonderful individuals that you are!
Finally, I am thankful that today is Saints football! [Happy Saintsgiving!]
Happy Thanksgiving!
...now go eat some turkey!

Cirque du Soleil Zumanity: the sensual side of @Cirque
Seeing Cirque du Soleil live is something I recommend everyone add to their 'bucket list' if it isn't on there already. I'm so grateful to Cirque for providing me the opportunity to see Zumanity live in Las Vegas while I was there attending BlogWorld 2010.
I spent the afternoon hanging out with the lovely @CarolSchiller and since my hubby didn't go along with me to BlogWorld I needed a date and she was wonderful enough to join me.
The Zumanity experience is unlink anything you can imagine. As soon as you enter, the mood and ambiance takes over. You have now entered a new world and prepare for the unexpected. The music is performed live by a very talented band and pair of singers, and confetti and flower petals that fall from the ceiling at different points throughout the show making the event truly unforgettable.
The show is interactive and as soon as you're seated you'll meet Dick & Izzy. Zumanity’s resident sex therapists, Dick and Izzy aim to please with their sexy and silly methods engaging the audience in a hilarious round of not-so-innocent repartee. The sexual tension runs high as Dick- a French sex merchant- peddles his wares, while Izzy- his wife!- searches the audience night after night for a boyfriend. It's hilarious and both @CarolSchiller and I were in fits of laughter whilst watching their antics all night. The audience isn't safe either!
The narrator and storyteller of the evening is the lovely Edie. As the sun sets and desires come alive, Edie uses her signature blend of sass and sensuality to guide the audience through the erotic escapades that make up the world of Zumanity. Edie is definitely a great character. She truly carries the show and makes it flow.
Watching Zumanity, my 'date' and I were both flabbergasted by the sheer athleticism these artists display. Not only are they all talented performers, their creative displays are so innovative! The Waterbowl (in picture below) is an amazing 'dance' between two women jumping, twisting and swimming in (and out of) a bowl of water on stage.
![]() |
| Waterbowl |
Tssius was another of my favorite acts. The aerial dance told a beautiful story of love and desire, and the performers' small stature made everything so incredible. Rose Boy (below on the right) was a delight to watch (*wink, wink*) both Carol and I could have sworn those abs were painted on! (I should have asked for a close-up view right?)
The finale was a rotating 'orgy' act (below). It was a feast for the eyes no doubt, and displayed all the glorious characters we'd seen all night.
In the middle of the act, two audience members were plucked from their seats and joined the cast on the rotating stage to partake in the fun. It was great to watch and the entire audience was roaring with laughter.

Seeing Zumanity was an experience I'll never forget, and look forward to seeing many more live Cirque du Soleil shows as well. All the performers are amazingly talented, and the entire performance experience is exciting!
Have YOU ever seen a Cirque show live? If so, which one? If not, which are you dying to see?
I WAS PROVIDED TICKETS TO CIRQUE DU SOLEIL: ZUMANITY FREE OF CHARGE IN ORDER TO REVIEW THE PERFORMANCE AND SHARE MY OPINION WITH YOU. MY OPINIONS ARE 100% MY OWN AND ARE IN NO WAY INFLUENCED BY THE COMPANY. FOR MORE INFO ON MY PR and REVIEW POLICIES CLICK HERE.

Yummy Fun: Smart and Final Wine/Cheese Party! #SFSmarties
Smart and Final is a great one-stop shop for anytime you're entertaining. Their website is also filled with great tip, tools, recipes and information to make any party a success!
Smart and Final's First Street brand cheese was featured with complementary wines (as selected via the wine serving guide on the SF website). It was a great experience both hosting the party as well as getting ready for it!
I do shop at Smart and Final for my family, but I generally only get specific things and avoid the aisles I don't need (hmmm..strategic shopping?) but this time shopping for the party I went through the whole store and found great deals on party supplies and decorations! *Who'd-a-Thunk?*
Anyhow it was a crazy day and a fun time. Thanks Smart and Final! [#SFSmarties shout out!]
Here's the story:

It was originally intended to have a couple of the other local businesses stop by, but as it turns out those we invited weren't able to make it so we had a Girl's Night! After a long day and a staff/training meeting, we sat down and had some fun together.
Even though my camera died and I was disappointed that I couldn't take pictures, the party was definitely a success. My co-workers and I are truly like family. We are 9 women who've worked together everyday, some for the past 5 years or more. Lately we have all been so busy, it was nice to have time together and just chat.
We sat around and talked about how our lives are going outside of work and shared silly stories and lighthearted conversation. It was a wonderful night and I know we're all thankful for the experience.

Sleeping my life away...
I enjoy my sleep, I really do. Before getting married, when I was living on my own I would frequently sleep entire Wednesdays away! [Mainly because I was working 2 jobs and going to college but I digress...]
On Saturday I woke up around 12:30pm (mmm...so lovely!) and the hubbs had been up since 8:30. So I stroll into the kitchen to make some coffee and hubbs comes in behind me and says: "Good afternoon..." to which I reply "Good morning dear!"
Then he continues................
Hubbs: "Ok so while you were sleeping it occurred to me that when you sleep until 12:30 and I was up at 8:30...I am living 4 more hours than you today!"
Me: "Ummm....what? I'm living while I'm asleep!"
Hubbs: "Yeah...but technically you're not really living."
[Oh how I adore his scientific hypotheses...NOT.]
Me: "Whatever I like to sleep...I enjoy it because it's 4 LESS hours I have to hear your crap."
[BTW I said the previous statement with the utmost love and kindness I promise.]
So he left the room and came back with a pad and pencil in hand:
Hubbs: "When you sleep 4 extra hours everyday for a week you'll loose 28 hours a week to sleeping! That's 1456 hours in a year! OMG that's 60 DAYS!"
Me: "See?! I'm actually helping our marriage! Just think..for every 6.1 years we're married I slept through 1. I'm liking those stats!"
Hubbs: "Maybe you're right...do you want to go back to sleep?"
aaand that was that.
The grin on his face looked like thought he 'won' somehow.
I don't agree but...whatever. I'll let him get an ego boost.
ALSO:
Who the heck came up with the whole "You can sleep when you're dead" quote.
I say to thee...WHAT?!

My #bwe10 Experience
Being a part of BlogWorld New Media Expo as a new blogger was an amazingly inspiring experience. I was able to meet so many wonderful bloggers; some of whose blogs I had been reading before even starting a blog myself! Not to mention the invaluable information passed along in the conference sessions.
To me, BlogWorld Expo truly affirms that Social Media is not a mere ‘fad’ but rather a whole new way of communicating with our world neighbors! I met bloggers, entrepreneurs, social media mavens and connected with wonderfully unique and down-to-earth individuals from all over the world!
The social media community is one of forward thinkers, and in that I find solace. To be in a room full of people who work hard each day to make life work for them is amazing.
IZEA, a company who is to me a great example of fresh new thinking in social media was my ticket sponsor to BlogWorld. (you can see my contest entry and info here.) During the Expo, Ted Murphy the Founder of IZEA was bathed in milk and cereal for charity! It was definitely a great interactive experience that took guts because it was cold in that expo hall. Here’s a glimpse:
Also, while at BlogWorld I won a spot on Blog Talk Radio! I was absolutely thrilled for the opportunity and although thoroughly nervous during the interview, I think I was able to get through it without making a complete fool of myself….you be the judge:

A HUGE Thanks goes out to IZEA for selecting me as one of the lucky few to attend BlogWorld New media Expo 2010! I'm sooooo excited and cannot wait to share my adventure with you all! CLICK HERE to see all the winners announced.

IZEA is partnering with BlogWorld New Media Expo to send 10 bloggers to their conference in Las Vegas this October!
Over the past year I have become a social media addict! I love that our global community is getting closer and more connected!
I'm a mom, a wife, daughter, blogger and sociocultural anthropology student...I need a weekend in Vegas!
Were I to be selected, I'd sing the praises of IZEA from California, all the way to Nevada and then some! Because I'm such a new blogger, I don't have any other conflicting sponsors, so IZEA...I need a tattoo of your logo or something!
I look forward to the great potential learning experience this conference will be! I hope to learn new things about blogging, branding, make connections with other bloggers, get new ideas and of course...have a little fun!
I'll actively keep my readers and followers posted all weekend long and bring back stories, tips, great blog posts and news!

Going Back to School...finally!
Tuesday was my first day of school.
I'm going to our local community college, and to be honest...I've been so nervous!
I'm not really worried about the difficulty of the classes, or the people...I worry about myself and my ability to stick with this to the end.
I had started college, but I quit after finding out I was pregnant. After that, we moved so many times in the past 4 years that I couldn't get resident tuition rates anywhere!
Now...I'm finally doing it!
Somewhere in between being a stay at home mom and becoming a working mom, I lost my mind. I'd forgotten the things that I used to do for me!
I never really liked school, but I love learning! I'm a geek....I have come to accept it and acknowledge the fact that I need this! I need to be in an environment where I'm learning and am able to challenge myself.
Being 23 I realize I'm on the lower end of the age spectrum when it comes to a community college, but I feel a lot 'older' than classmates my age.
I am older! Maybe not physically but life has made me older...I think about everything so differently than they do and it's evident even after a short conversation.
But the good thing is I'm setting reasonable goals!
I spent a lot of my teenage years setting unreachable goals, failing (inevitably) and then wallowing in my failure & self pitty.
..sad and ridiculous I know.
Setting goals I can reach...and then reaching them is going to feel great!
So...I pledge to YOU readers of my blog: I will do my absolute darnedest (including extra credit) not to get anything below a B- ever! ...that's reasonable right?
I'll post my grades in December for all to see :)
Words of encouragement are greatly appreciated!

you can't believe EVERYTHING they say in movies...
*Hint: you really only need to watch the first 55 seconds of this video...then read my post below For some reason today a little experience from some years ago popped into my head and made me giggle to myself...I wanted to share & hopefully someone finds it as funny as I did.
Alright so,
It was a few years back that I watched this movie [Undercover Brother] with a group of my friends. I'm the only 'ethnic' one in the group (not that it's an issue but its part of the story). Any-who, I don't know what made us pick this movie but it is hilarious! We all laughed and had a good time & went home.
The next day I'm going to meet up with those same friends and on my way I get a phone call and it goes something like this:
(for the purposes of this let's call friend "A")
Me: "hello?"
A: "hey, I know you're on your way but I'm at Submarina do you want something?"
Me: "yeah sounds good, just get me a veggie sandwich on wheat bread...OH! and avocado please!"
A: "ok cool see you when you get here"
Me: "ok bye"
...about 30 seconds passes and the phone rings again...
Me: "hey"
A: "hey! ummm.......I just wanted to ask you.......do you want mayo on your sandwich?"
Me: (while in fits of laughter) "Haha! yes I do want mayo thank you."
A: "haha okay sorry I just wanted to make sure"
I love my friends...do YOU have a random funny story? SHARE in the COMMENTS!
