Sorry #ABCnightline, not MY kid!
Last night watched an old ABC Nightline special (on Hulu) about sexy clothes and media being targeted at the ‘tween’ market. While I would agree that there are ‘child’ stars like Miley Cyrus and Taylor Momsen dressing completely inappropriately for their age, and that this is a terrible example for younger girls; I definitely have an issue with the way ABC presented it.
Firstly, the two girls being ‘interviewed’ for the segment were 12 years old and sitting on the bed in one of their rooms reading People, Glamour, and Seventeen magazines. Forgive me, but aren’t those a bit out of their age range and demographic? My mother didn’t even let me read Seventeen until I turned seventeen because she felt the subject matter wasn’t appropriate. Hello? It’s called parenting!
Second, one of the girls went shopping with her mother at Forever XXI and H&M. Once again, two stores whose target demographic is NOT tweens. They panned the cameras across the clothing in the store showing short skirts, dresses and corsets all while the narrator talks about how this sexually suggestive clothing is marketed to young 10-13 year old girls. [I think not.] And furthermore, when the girl tried on several pieces of clothing the mother said “no” each time proving to me that this is most likely not a shop this child frequents with her mother.
I don’t disagree with the idea that girls should stay girls for as long as possible. There’s no reason for girls to dress older than they are and there are stores geared towards tweens with age appropriate clothing: Justice, Gap Kids or The Gap, Old Navy, The Children’s Place (yes, up to 14!), and of course there’s the old standby department stores. Hmmm…oh yeah parents this is your job to monitor where your kids buy clothes!
My issue is this: “ABC, why sensationalize?” The problem here to me is the parents. Parents who don’t monitor what their children read, watch, or wear are at fault. I’m not saying parents should prohibit access to the world but if keeping your kid a kid is important to you then take the necessary precautions to keep their lives as wholesome and age-appropriate as possible. Oh man, it’s that parenting stuff again!
If ABC really wants a good show, go interview Taylor Momsen and Miley Cyrus’ parents and find out why they allow their daughters to dress the way they do. Then, perhaps find a few parents in the US with 14-15 year old daughters whom they allow to dress inappropriately and find out what’s going on in their ridiculous minds. If they need any help finding people, I grew up in Southern California; land of the mini-skirts…I know a few…I’ll call them.
We brought kids into this world to raise them not to just let them grow like weeds. Sorry Miley and Taylor, but you just couldn’t be MY kid. (not dressed like that anyway)!
Let’s stop pointing the finger of blame on the media and the marketers, and remember than when you do, there are 4 other fingers pointing right back at you!

Wholesale Costume Club (Review)
Wholesale Costume Club is an excellent place to get your Halloween costumes this year! By becoming a member of their site (which is very simple), you will get discounted prices on everything site-wide! At the moment, 1-Year memberships are FREE.
I was sent the Sorceress Costume (picutred below) and it is excellent quality. It looks just like the picture! It fits true to size and the material is very soft. I generally am disappointed in the costumes I find at retail stores, but the costumes at Wholesale Costume Club are surprisingly wonderful. Their selection of womens costumes and adult costumes is endless and most of them and are priced between $30 and $60.
The Sorceress Costume comes with the sexy torn looking dress, eyeball medallion necklace, tall black witches’ hat, and the eyeball hand accessory. Priced at $33.00 for members, this costume is a great deal!
Wholesale Costume club has something for everyone!

"From the mouths of babes..."
The other day while getting ready for school, munchkin stepped on one of his toys and it took a big 'ol chunk out of the bottom of his foot.
*ouch*
He was wailing, so I cleaned the cut, put on a band-aid and we continued getting ready to go. Over the nest half our, munchkin took his band-aid of TWICE! I kept telling him to keep them on his foot because otherwise it wouldn't heal (and I was running low on band-aids).
He was wailing, so I cleaned the cut, put on a band-aid and we continued getting ready to go. Over the nest half our, munchkin took his band-aid of TWICE! I kept telling him to keep them on his foot because otherwise it wouldn't heal (and I was running low on band-aids).
At preschool that day he took off his band-aids 3 or 4 times and then when school was over he wasn't wearing one, so I put on another.
That evening at home, I replaced the band-aid 4 more times and each time told him "do NOT take this OFF!"
So...at night I usually lay with munchkin in his bed & we talk about our day.
Here's how the convo went that night:
Mom: "Today was a good day, wasn't it hun?"
Munchkin: "Yeah mom but I hurt my foot."
Mom: "I know you did & that was unfortunate but we learned a lot from that experience! We learned that our toys need to be in their place so we don't step on them, and we learned that shoes protect our feet from things on the ground that can cut us."
Munchkin: "Yeah..."
Mom: "So what did we learn...?"
Munchkin: "Don't take your band-aid off!"
*Haha! I had to stifle my laughter*
Well at least one point stuck with him from that experience...right? ;)
Do you have any funny stories? Share them in the comments & I'll post them on my blog in a few weeks!

5 PARENTING THINGS I SAID I'D NEVER DO..yeah right!
Here's my list...try to hold your laughter because I know it's ridiculous!
"I will never....."
1. let kids sleep in our bed. [FAIL] - Ha! This one started off well. The munchkin slept in his crib every night until he was about 6 months old & we moved back to California from Louisiana. We sold the crib because we couldn't bring it with us and then we took way too long to get him a new one once we were in California. Finally, we got him out of our bed at age 2 & he does well in his own room too! (Phew!)
2. let my kid watch TV. [FAIL] - Whaaat? My son is an extremely active kid, so 99.9% of the time I'm chasing him around or trying to figure out where he's wandered off to. He's never still and really wouldn't even pay attention to TV until he was over 2 years old. I can't deny it...I need a breather sometimes & he loves PBS kids, not to mention his adoration of Zoodles games online. Major kudos who keep their kids brains TV free!
3. buy my child loud toys. [FAIL] - My hubby's grandmother doomed this one from the start. She has this adorable collection of dancing and singing stuffed animals and dolls. ANY-WHO, whenever Benny would go to her house she'd bring them out & he really got a kick out of them so she bought him a little penguin that sang "Ice Ice Baby". (and that was just the start!) I'm convinced that my son is like genetically predisposed to love the loudest & most repetitive toys ever made!
4. go out with mismatched clothing. [FAIL] - Oh MAN! Not only have I let go of this insanely impossible ideal, but nowadays I don't even care whether he has clothes on at all! Maybe it's even better that way & they can stay clean a bit longer! LoL My son has also made it quite clear that when he's home he likes to be "in the nude, dude!"
5. use conventional diapers. [FAIL] - I was born in Brasil & we lived in S. America for the first 3 years of my life. My mom used cloth diapers on me and said it made potty training that much easier (I was fully potty trained at 14 months)...so I decided to do the same. I lasted about 6 months and then I just couldn't keep up with it and opted for Pampers. Maybe next time!

Can you identify with anything on my list? What are some things you said "I'd never..." about raising kids before having them? Share it in the comments! I loooove comments :)

The BEST thing for kids online! [Zoodles Review]
I am so excited to bring you a review of Zoodles. It is a kid friendly internet browser that allows parents to have confidence in letting their children play games and watch videos online independently! I made a quick little video to tell you all how much I've enjoyed Zoodles over the last year. I found Zoodles completely by chance after being frustrated with the amount of ADs that sites like Playhouse Disney and Nick Jr. display on their sites. Zoodles is FREE, but there is a paid premium option that allows you to fully customize your child's experience and it's only $39.99 for a full year! (about $3.39 p/month) When you try Zoodles for the first time, you'll get 14 days of premium features that you're sure to fall in love with. As I mention in my video, we've used the FREE version for most of the past year & loved it!
I really wanted to be able to make a screen-cast of how my Zoodles parent dashboard looks, but I was unable to get the sound to work. Click here to view Zoodles' one minute tour.
Here are some screenshots of my parent dashboard, specifically the subjects pertaining to the shows, games and everything my munchkin does on Zoodles. As I mentioned in my video, I have math and reading at 100% on the 'promote subjects' page of my dashboard.
I hope you enjoyed learning about Zoodles, and I hope you'll check it out! It's well worth it to use Zoodles versus allowing your kids on websites with no filter!
*In the interest of full-disclosure: I contacted Zoodles letting them know we'd been using their program for over a year and would like to review. I not paid to write this review however, I was given a few months of Zoodles premium.
